Jennifer Fox
Title: Free Woman
Gender: Female
Location: New York, NY
About Me:
I am an independent documentary filmmaker and teacher. I am a traveler, an artist and an activist. While creating my latest film, FLYING, I realized that our society is severely lacking in positive attitudes towards female sexuality. The response I've received from women who have seen the film has been overwhelmingly positive. And it dawned on me: this dialogue that the film creates could indeed be the catalyst for a larger social movement to empower women through sexuality. Join me in my journey to spread this message.
What I wish to promote:
Positive attitudes in women towards sex and female sexuality. Sex is inextricably connected to power and personal choice. We (those of us at Zohe Films and the many women who have already joined me in taking up this cause) wish to affiliate ourselves with people that support this core belief and support positive attitudes towards female sexuality in areas of artist expression, education, legislation, and community outreach programs. I believe that encouraging women to acknowledge their desire and seek pleasure from sexual contact empowers them to take charge of their own bodies and acknowledge the choice that is made with every sexual encounter. We wish to take the societal stigma of “women as victims” out of sexual acts and turn sex into something to be celebrated. We support positive representations of women in the media, non-exploitive forms of sexual expression, gender-specific programming for girls, comprehensive/pleasure positive sexual education and reproductive rights.
What you can do:
* Tell your own story and share it our fellow sisters. You can comment on my blog or “pass the camera” with friends.
*Host a house party with your friends (female and male alike!) and screen the first two parts of our series. We'll send it to you in exchange for a dialogue. We don't want your money; we just want your thoughts and reactions to the film. Hopefully you will post these reactions on our website and ideally it would compel you to create your own video, essay, poem, picture, rant, etc. etc.
* Like our message? Tell your friends! This is a grassroots word-of-mouth movement and everyone who participates is a part of making it grow. We believe that the zaadz community is an excellent resource of like-minded people who believe that the world can change through simple actions and sharing ideas, but it doesn’t end here. We want to touch every woman in the world and remind everyone, everywhere of our sisterhood and common experience. Raise your voices and connect with one another!
*Share any foundations, organizations, social groups or people who are active in this field. We’d love to meet people who are already working for this cause; we’ve just had a hard time finding them.
*Suggestions, comments and questions welcome!
Here's a little about my film:
FLYING: CONFESSIONS OF A FREE WOMAN, the new groundbreaking 2-part documentary film series in which critically acclaimed filmmaker Jennifer Fox lays bare her own turbulent life to penetrate what it means to be a free woman today. She travels to over 17 countries to understand how diverse women define their lives, when there is no map. The film is a cross-cultural story about common experiences of modern female life. Part delectable soap opera, sociopolitical inquiry, and narrative experiments, FLYING sweeps us up into an addictive international adventure chronicled with sincerity, innovation and elegance.
